Fishing with worms
Fishing with worms can be the most exciting way to fish. Freshwater fishing with worms or nightcrawlers can generate the most activity under the water surface you can imagine. Fishing with live bait is always the best way to locate fish. As a rule finding fish can be challenging on any lake. If you use live bait like worms or nightcrawlers on any freshwater lake, you will find fish. Sometimes they may be small, but as a rule if there are fish in the area you are fishing, something will find it!
Bluegills, Crappie, Perch and many other fish will usually be the first to show up. When you find small fish, you generally can find big fish. Keep in mind that largemouth bass feed on worms, so do Walleye. Northern pike have been known to bite on a nightcrawler. But then they will bite on just about anything when they are hungry. Especially shiny lures!
Live bait is always the best way to locate fish. They will bite on live bait if they a finicky and not take any artificial lures such as spinner baits or jigs. I always start with live bait just to see if there is any activity. If I see that Im only catching the little ones and nothing else I will sometimes switch to a plastic worm or a spinner bait depending on what I am fishing for. Then I can see if anything else bigger may be out there and hungry.
Keep in mind fishing with worms or nightcrawlers can be the best fishing bait to use on any lake, river or stream. Worms always seem to be bait that is accepted by walleye, crappie, bluegill, largemouth bass and many more species of freshwater fish. Make sure you have fresh worms that are lively and full of life. Remember to sift through the worm bucket or pail for the dead ones and remove them right away. They can kill the rest of your worms very quickly.
Obviously the time of year and weather conditions will change my way of thinking at the time. But I still go back to live bait to locate fish. I may use shrimp or crabs if I am fishing in the rivers that are near the ocean. Again, live bait is the key in many situations to locate fish. You may be catching many small fish, but as you know, where there is small fish there is usually big fish feeding on them.
Good Fishing!
